These quizzes are on Christ's Agony. They are a bit different from my other quizzes. These are more like studies than they are like quizzes. See Scripture passages: Matthew 26:47-56: Mark 14:43-50; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:3-11. 1. What arrangement had Judas, one of the twelve disciples, made with the chief priests and elders as a sign to identify Jesus so that He could be arrested? Mark 14:44, 45 2. What did Jesus do, even before Judas had even given the soldiers his signal? John 18:4 3. According to the account in John 18, what surprising thing happened when Jesus identified Himself as the one for whom they were looking? 4. What defensive thing did Peter do, to demonstrate his impulsive love for his Master? John 18:10 5. From Luke 22:52 & 53 (See also Matthew 26:55 and Mark 14:48) what did Jesus say to those who had come out to arrest Him? NOTE: They seized Jesus, bound Him (John 18:12), and led Him to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas. 6. What predicted (and disgraceful) thing did Peter do? (Luke 22:55-62; Matthew 26:69-75; Mark 14:66-72; John 18:16-18 and 25-27? 7. What four things happened next, in regards to Peter? (Luke 22:60) 8. What was the difference between Judas' tears and Peter's tears? Matthew 26:69-27:9 ANSWERS: 1. Answer: Mark 14:44, 45- (NIV) "Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard. Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, Rabbi! and he kissed him." .... Judas had prearranged this, and his pay was to be thirty pieces of silver." John 18:3, and gathered from other Gospels, it is suggested that among those who came with Judas were Roman soldiers, officers of the temple guard, chief priests and teachers of the law.2. Answer: He identified Himself. John 18:4 0-- (NIV) "Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, "Who is it you want?" I think that Jesus was giving Judas a final opportunity to repent. But Satan had already entered into Judas. He had sold his soul to the devil. 3. Answer: John 18:5 (NIV) When the soldiers said that it was Jesus of Nazareth whom they were searching, Jesus identified Himself. Surprised that He should expose Himself to being arrested, the soldiers drew back and fell to the ground. 4. Answer: Peter cut off the servant ear. John 18:10 True to his personality, Peter was quick to defend his Lord. Jesus reprimanded him for his impulsive act and mended the ear. John identifies the servant who lost his ear as Malchus. Jesus tells Peter to put his sword away. Christ had already reached the crisis. In the garden He had sweat drops of blood in agony over what He knew He had to do. Satan had already been defeated. Now He tells Peter "Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?" 5. Answer: (My own words, taken from NIV). " Do you think that I am the leader of a rebellion or something? Why bring your swords and clubs? I was with you every day at the temple and around your streets. Could you not have taken me then? But go ahead. Do what you have to do. After all, it is dark now, and your faces can't be seen.) Luke 22:52 & 53 (See also Matthew 26:55 and Mark 14:48 6. Answer: According to John's gospel (18:15), Peter and another disciple (probably John, as he is the writer of the account) went with Jesus to the priest's court yard. John knew the high priest, and was admitted inside. Peter had to wait outside. John spoke to the attending girl, and Peter was allowed inside too. It was to the girl that Peter made his first denial. When questioned by her, he lied, saying he was not one of the disciples. As he stood around the fire, because it was cold, he denied again that he was Christ's disciple. Then the questioning got hotter. One of the relatives of Malchus, whose ear Peter had cut off, recognized Peter and asked again if he were not one of those who were with Jesus. It was then that Peter began to swear (Mark 14:71), vehemently declaring that he was not one of Christ's followers. 7. Answer: (Luke 22:60 - 62) After Peter's third denial four things happened in quick succession: The rooster crowed; Jesus turned and looked at Peter; Peter remembered Jesus' earlier prediction, that he would deny Him; Peter went out and wept bitterly. 8. Answer: Matthew 26:69-27:9 Peter wept tears of repentance. After he had denied his Lord, and remembered Jesus' prediction, and after he saw the look on Jesus' face at his denial, he went out and wept tears of bitterness. He had said to Jesus earlier that even though everyone else forsook Him, he would not. (Matthew 26:35) But he did. How could Jesus ever forgive him? But (my own person opinion) the look Jesus gave Peter was not only a look of disappointment; it was also a look of forgiveness. Jesus knew Peter's heart (and He knows ours). Judas, on the other hand, had already crossed the line of no return. He had sold his soul to the devil for thirty pieces of silver. Jesus had given him every opportunity to repent (see question 4). Judas could have backed away from his diabolical plan. He could have chosen Christ's forgiveness. Greed, and loss of face, prevented him. After he saw that Jesus was condemned to death, however, he went out and wept bitterly. His tears were tears of remorse. © Helen Dowd
