Occupy TilI I Come
by Evelyn Splane

Personal testimony of (Rev.) Miss Evelyn Splane: Founder and Director of India For Christ:

*******

Following graduation from Prairie Bible College, and a short term in New Tribes Mission Boot Camp Training, I proceeded to India in 1955 (I was not yet 25) under that mission........ "Launching on a lifetime!" I wrote someone from the ship as I set sail. That is what I expected it to be—a lifetime commitment. Yet, the first term I served only for five years.

After an interlude of several years, since the doors to that field were no longer open to me, I and a co-worker again became involved in front-line missions, serving in Guyana, S. A., then in West Indies and other places, even in Israel. Particularly from Guyana and West Indies where we labored, many young lives were touched, who are now in full time ministry or mission work themselves.

It was in 1978 that the door opened again to me to enter India, but not in the same manner or mission. I have labored in three language areas in South India. Perhaps it could be said of my earlier years of experience— though hardships, disappointments and seeming failures often loomed—that those were periods of training for the future ministry God held for me.

Now, in Andhra Pradesh, India, as I looked across a company of some 1500 shining brown faces, gathered as they were on Easter Sunday, '97, I was overwhelmed with the thought—"What if I had not come up to this unlikely, unlovely place? Where would all these souls be?" We had baptized 50 that day—fruit of the ministry of INDIA FOR CHRIST mission. The greater percent of the whole number are idol-worshiping, caste Hindus, and a sprinkling of Muslims, all of whom have been converted by our ministry over the past 10 year period. Lives utterly transformed!

INDIA FOR CHRIST is a mission, now registered in India and in Canada, which I pioneered from zero with "mustard-seed faith" in operation, coupled with much prayer and hard labor. I was alone the first three years without knowledge of this new Telugu language. After much concentrated prayer, in 1986 the Lord brought the dedicated and able Indian man of His choosing to work along side of me.

Since a "Missionary Visa" is unavailable I have to leave after spending six months each year; but even in so doing I have seen an amazing work grow and become a thriving hub of activity and haven of help for countless souls. Without money to develop it, in 1986 August, I purchased a plot of ground in an empty agricultural field. In mid-1987 the beginning of a church sprouted and now a church building, planned to seat * 900 overflows each Sunday. On special occasions we hire and set up tents and the whole compound teems with singing, happy, redeemed souls. They are by no means "rice Christians" but solid converts bringing others in for the help, hope of the soul, and healing of the body they themselves have found in Christ Jesus.

We also have a children's home. Our place is named JERUSALEM NAGAR.

Throughout the country town, Chilakaluripet, of some 125,000, are many others also, in their homes, who have fully believed in their hearts; but due to the prohibitions of opposing Hindu husbands or parents they dare not come to the services, much less be baptized. In several surrounding villages also works have been started and churches planted. We have about 14 congregations in 4 districts in Andhra Pradesh with 21 pastors working.

I am the only foreign missionary. Though I hold honor of being Founder and President and fully throw myself into any and all activity while present for six months at a time yearly, I consider myself the LINK to this country from whence we must receive support for operational to help to the native workers.

Now I am of the so-called "Retirement age", yet I have no intention of quitting front-line missionary service so long as I have an open door and the Lord supplies me with strength. I intend to "Occupy until He comes" ,or until He calls me out of service. Praise God!

* In 2000, a church which seats a congregation of 2000 was completed.
