The Two Faces of the New Year
Helen Dowd

New Year's has two faces.

One face is the face the world views.
Right now everyone is preparing for NEW YEAR'S EVE. The women are talking about what outfit they are going to wear to the party. The men are arranging for tickets, buying flowers for their sweethearts or wives. Women are lining up reliable baby sitters. Men are arranging for responsible drivers for after the party. Amidst it all, there is excitement, excitement about the New Year's Eve…

ON THAT NIGHT:
New HOPE Is Born

Happy New Year! Hurrah!
The old year is gone.
Balloons are let loose in the air.
The bands all explode,
And folks sing along.
The party’s a gala affair.

There’s dancing, rejoicing,
Wine glasses are raised.
Folks toast to the New Year ahead.
Resolutions are voiced,
And banners displayed.
Hurrah! For the old year is dead.

Year after year people seem to be expecting that the New Year will make all their dreams come true. They are hoping that their life will automatically be different, that they will have a fresh new start. But as Eliphaz, the Temanite said to Job, during Job's affliction, in Job 5:6 & 7 "for hardship does not spring from the soil, nor does trouble sprout from the ground. Yet man is born to trouble as surly as sparks flies upward." NIV

Without God, life will not improve. The New Year will not be any different from the Old Year.

The other face is the face the Christian views.
Our HOPE is in the Lord. We know that God is with us at all times, and a date on the calendar is just another day we can spend doing what God leads and directs us to do.

ON THAT NIGHT:
Our HOPE Is RENEWED

Happy New Year! Praise God!
Let the Christians rejoice.
Let’s lift up our banners in praise.
God’s still on the throne!
We make Him our choice.
Our voices with thanks we do raise.

Happy New Year! Praise God!
A new HOPE is born.
Mistakes of last year we review.
We bow down our heads
On this New Year’s morn.
Our faith in our God we renew.

Psalm 40:29-31 "He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."

I wish you all a very blessed NEW YEAR.

Here is a promise from God's Word, for you to stand on for the year 2004.

Psalm 41:10 "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
