We Are Native American
Usti Yona

My name is Usti Yona. I am an Apache/Cherokee with some white blood. My Christian name is James McConnell. My wife is Cherokee and white. Her name is Spotted Owl. Her Christian name is Bonnie McConnell. We are both elders in the American Indian Association of Millington, Tennessee. Millington is a small town outside of Memphis, Tennessee where we reside. I am 64 winters old and my wife is 60 winters. I am pastor of a small church which meets in my home.

We Native Americans are a very spiritual people. We are nothing like we are portrayed in the movies. We are not savages. We are a people who love the Creator and believe that all things are connected.

We believe there is a web of life which connects them. Whatever you do to the web, you do to yourself. … We believe that you should not take more than you need so as to keep a balance of nature. …We also believe that Creator gave us the responsibility for taking care of Mother Earth. Do you remember what God told Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden? They were to take care of the garden. That was their responsibility. That sounds like what we believe is our responsibility. I wonder where we got that notion!! You will find that many of our beliefs are very similar to Christian beliefs.

We are both Christian and Native American. This may sound odd to you, but we are. To show you what I mean, on the Cherokee reservation in Oklahoma we post the 10 Commandments in all courts and public buildings. We do not allow gay marriages on the reservation. Where our old beliefs are in conflict with the Bible, we always go with the Bible. It is the absolute truth! God can not lie and the word of God is God.

John 1:1 says "In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made."
John 1:14 says "And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father.) full of grace and truth."
