Love? What's That?
by Helen Dowd

A group of professional people posed the question, “What does Love mean?” to a group of children, aged 4 to 8. Here are two of their answers:

“There are two kinds of love: Our love and God’s love. But God makes both kinds of them.”

“God could have said magic words to make the nails fall off the cross, but He didn’t. That’s love.”

“LOVE - agape (ag - ah - pay). Noun-- meaning ‘love’.

It can be used to denote:

* A person’s love for God --John 5:42 - "But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you." as in this case, Christ said to the Jews. Or in I John 2:15: Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

* God’s love for humanity --Romans 5:8 - But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.;

* And God’s love for Jesus John 15:10 - If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. And in John 17:26 - And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them..

Jesus reveals His love for believers by laying down His life, and He commands that believers love each other. John 15:9-13 - As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

A cornerstone of the New Testament teachings about God is that ‘God is love.’ I John 4:8,16.

Love is also the gift God gives to us to pass on to others.

Love is gentle; Love is sweet.
Jesus makes our Love complete.
While at work and while at play,
May we God’s great Love display.

“Let us Love one another, for Love is of God.” I John 4:7
