Petunia-Piggie - A Pleasing Project - Craft
Hartson Dowd

Here is another way for you to kill your vacation boredom. Make Miss Petunia Piggie. If you are ten or older, you should be able to safely use the tools. Perhaps you can help your younger siblings in using scissors, screwdriver, hammer and serrated knife. But whatever you do, BE CAREFUL!

You will need for each pig:

* One plastic juice bottle with its cap
* A serrated knife
* A screwdriver
* A hammer
* Some pink felt
* Scissors
* Tacky Glue
* One long Pipe Cleaner
* Potting Soil
* Four Petunia Plants
* Plastic eyes
* 4 Large Corks

Directions:

1. With the serrated knife, cut an opening in the side of the bottle large enough to hold the four plants.

2. Punch four drainage holes opposite the opening on the plastic bottle.
The easiest way: Set the bottle down with the opening facing up. Put a screwdriver through the opening and hammer it to make holes on the opposite side.

3. Punch a hole in the bottom end of the bottle for the pigs tail.

4. Cut a 4-inch square of felt diagonally to make two triangles.
Fold each triangle again and glue the edges shut, forming ears.
Glue to the sides of the bottle, about 2-inches from the top.
Let dry for at least ten minutes.

5. Cut 2 inch by 6 inch strip of the pink felt and wrap it around the pipe cleaner, leaving an end sticking out on one side.
Glue edges of felt.

6. Curl felt-lined pipe cleaner to make a tail, then put exposed end of pipe cleaner through the tail hole in the bottle and knot it.

7. Glue on two plastic eyes.

8. Pack the potting soil into the pig’s head before planting the flowers.

9. Place the four corks underneath the bottle, these feet will raise it up for drainage holes to work. Practice placement of the corks before gluing them to the bottle.

Looking after Miss Petunia Piggie:

Now that Petunia is finished, watch her grow. Make it a daily chore to give her water. Make sure that she has the right amount of sun and shade. Don't forget about her. She will give you many hours of delight when her flowers start to grow.
Hint, Hint, Hint: If there is any left over tea or coffee in the house (cold--no cream or sugar), give her a drink of it, diluted with water.

Suggestion: This is an ideal gift to take to someone who is ill, or in the hospital. She will bring a smile.
